Designing a Beachy Bathroom Renovation
Guest bathrooms are a fun place to push the boundaries a little more when it comes to design. While the rest of Project Through The Woods is very neutral with a big emphasis on whites and creams, we decided to add a splash of color into this bathroom design. We still wanted it to feel cohesive with the rest of the home, so we kept the tones limited to colors found in nature (which keeps the design timeless), and we used the beach as our main inspiration.
The Starting Point
This bathroom is small but we packed some design punch in here. It started out more than a little outdated:
At the very beginning of the design process, we always like to pick one main piece to be the jumping off point for the room. For this bathroom renovation, we fell in love with the Fantasy Macaubas quartzite countertops. The slabs had a lots of movement and interest, and the colors reminded us of ocean waves crashing down. We purchased the slabs first and then moved on to the rest of the design choices.
Custom Cabinetry
We are big proponents for custom millwork, whether that’s a vanity, kitchen cabinets, or even built-ins and shelves. When you go custom, the options are endless when it comes to design, storage, and the finish, so you know you can get exactly what you need to create a very functional space.
Since this was a guest bathroom, there wasn’t a need for as much storage as say your primary bathroom might need. That gave us more flexibility with the design of the vanity. We wanted it to feel a little bit like a piece of furniture, almost like a console table, so we designed a big open bottom with only a few drawers for necessities. And to keep the stone counter the main focus, we added a large waterfall around the front and sides.
Selecting the Hard Finishes
Now that we had our jumping off point and the vanity designed, it was time to select the other finishes. We chose simple tiles to let the slab do the talking, but we played with scale here. We went huge with the wall tiles in the shower and small with the floor tiles, but made them continuous from throughout the entire bathroom. They make such a quiet statement and we love it.
Plumbing fixtures are like the jewelry in a bathroom. We added some glam with the brushed gold finish of the shower system and faucet. Then we finished the room off with a mixed metal vibe by adding black in the lighting and towel hooks.
5 Tips for Creating a Successful Bathroom Design:
Start with one special piece that will be your jumping off point for the entire design
Go custom with the vanity if budget allows to really maximize style and function for the space
Don’t be afraid to go a little more bold in guest bathrooms than you might do in your everyday bathroom
Play with shape and scale to keep visual interest, tile is a great place to do this
A combination of metals adds a casual and collected feel the design, go for that mix
