DIY a Hanging Dried Floral Arrangement for the Holiday Season

Dried floral arrangement hanging over set dining room table.

Recently, we were scrolling through social for some design inspo when we landed on a few pictures from a big, fancy wedding. They hung a massive floral arrangement over the table for a really chic, dramatic look. And best yet, it didn’t look very hard to recreate. So naturally, we needed to try it out for ourselves with some dried florals to make the ultimate suspended centerpiece.

My mom’s house that we’re renovating (also known as #projectthroughthewoods on Instagram) isn’t completely done yet—we’re still waiting on some finishing pieces, like light fixtures. So with a little persuading, we DIYd our own dried floral arrangement in the dining room for you all to see. This is how we created the look and how you can do it too!

How to Create a Hanging Dried Floral Arrangement

What you’ll need:

  • Chicken wire

  • Wire cutters

  • String

  • Ceiling hooks

  • Dried florals in a variety of textures. Pro tip: Unless you want to clean up dried floral flakes for weeks, take all your dried flowers outside and spray them with hairspray to prevent them from shedding.

Once you gather your items, it’s time to get crafty!

Step 1:

Chicken wire being rolled into a tube or sausage shape.

Start by deciding how long you want your hanging dried floral arrangement to be. Next, roll the wire into a sausage shape at your desired length and secure string to each end of the tube.

Step 2:

Fasten two ceiling hooks over the center of your dining table (or wherever else you want to create a focal point. We’ve seen people hang dried floral arrangements from a wall using command hooks!). Secure the string to these hooks so that the chicken wire sausage hangs parallel to the table.

Step 3:

Now, it’s time for the fun stuff. Arrange your flowers by starting with the fluffiest pieces, as these take up the most space. Stick the stems into the wire sausage in all different directions for an earthy, asymmetrical look. Then, work your way down to the slimmest flowers. Once the chicken wire gets full, it’ll hold the stems better, so you can more easily leave some accent pieces sticking out. In the end, we wanted to add a few larger flowers, so we stole some roses from my mom’s bush. After spinning them upside down to open them up, we tucked them into the arrangement for an elegant final touch.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Buy a LOT of dried flowers—much more than you think you need. We’ve linked some really affordable options for you!

  • Keep all your stems super long, so you can better angle them into the wire.

  • Warning: this project is messy! Don’t set your table before doing this DIY. We suggest you lay a drop cloth to help clean up faster.

  • When selecting your florals, choose a variety of textures, shapes, and sizes to prevent your arrangement from appearing too long and thin.

Trust us when we say this DIY is easier than it looks—we literally had no idea what we were doing at first, and we still nailed it. Here’s everything we used so you can achieve the same look:
